Digital therapeutics (DTx) - evidence-based interventions delivered through software to prevent, manage or treat medical conditions - are rapidly moving from pilot projects to core care pathways.
In South Africa, the drivers are clear: rising chronic disease burden, uneven access to specialists and the need to support patients between clinic visits. Smartphone penetration over 70% and improved data coverage have created the rails for app-based care to scale.
Hypertension lead the way. BP tracking apps with coaching, medication reminders and lifestyle nudges improve adherence and control rates. Diabetes-management platforms that sync with glucometers help patients spot trends early and avoid complications. Mental-health CBT apps expand reach for mild-to-moderate anxiety and depression - especially where therapists are scarce.
What works? Simple interfaces, local-language support, clinical oversight and integration with clinic workflows. What doesnt? Apps that are not evidence-based, designed without patients, or launched without training and follow-up.
Adoption is strongest in metros and private healthcare today, but public-sector momentum is building through district pilots and national digital-health strategies.
