An international research team led by Hiroshima University has developed a new way to detect early collagen damage in the skin before visible signs such as thinning, fragmentation or ageing-related structural breakdown appear. Reported on 16 July 2026, the study found that collagens hidden internal organisation can begin to unravel at a molecular level before the larger fibres show obvious damage under conventional imaging. Using advanced chiroptical spectroscopy together with confocal imaging, the researchers were able to examine both the molecular order and visible fibre structure of collagen in the same tissue sections, showing that changes in collagen organisation and chirality may act as early warning signals of skin ageing. This is important because collagen gives skin much of its strength, firmness and elasticity, and damage to this network is linked to ageing, wound-healing problems and sun-related skin deterioration. The discovery is still at a research stage and not yet a routine dermatology test, but it points toward a future where doctors and skincare scientists may be able to detect skin damage earlier, track treatment response more accurately and develop interventions before ageing changes become visible on the surface. © Copyright 2025 Medi-Mag™.
